- General Habitat for Humanity Information
Persons who receive homes from Habitat have put in many hours of "sweat equity" while working on their homes and the homes of others. They are joined by volunteers, supervised by professional builders and staff, to complete the actual houses.
Homeowners get a low/no-interest mortgage with Habitat; the payments that they make go into a fund which is used to purchase land for more homes.
No office expenses come from the funds that churches raise for Habitat. Corporate grants, procured by Habitat, pay those administrative expenses.
It costs about $100,000 to purchase building materials for each house. When you give to Habitat through the Presbytery and its churches you're helping to purchase those supplies. When you volunteer to help at a "build site" or in the Habitat store, you're helping homeowners-to-be live in their new homes that much sooner.
Many churches use their Peacemaking funds as a part of their donation to Habitat; others have creative ways to earn the funds they'll donate. Many of our churches send volunteers to help at the building sites. Please check out the Current Projects section below for information or contact the Presbytery Advocate.
