ABOUT CEPAD:
CEPAD is Spanish-language acronym for Council of Protestant Churches of Nicaragua. This group "works to serve more than seventy poor communities across Nicaragua through programs that promote justice, peace and equitable solidarity with the aim of empowering people to carry out their own development." (quote from CEPAD)
HOW CEPAD FACILITATES PARTERSHIPS: When a group in North America or Europe applies to CEPAD for assistance in creating a partnership with a Nicaraguan community/group, CEPAD looks for goals, interests, resources, etc. that the two prospective partners have that complement each other. Once a suggested partnership is "on the table" each group needs to decide if this arrangement is, indeed, a desirable situation before the partnership is established. It is expected that the partnership will be mutually beneficial; CEPAD is not soliciting impersonal donations to the Nicaraguan communities that they work with. The Presbytery's application was accepted by CEPAD in the Fall of 2007.
PROCESS BACKGROUND: The Mission Interpretation and Promotion Committee (MIP) sponsored a fact-finding trip to Nicaragua in 2006, using CEPAD as the facilitator. While there, the group saw first-hand how CEPAD's partnership programs operate and decided that their assistance would help the Presbytery establish a rewarding partnership opportunity. After ascertaining that a significant number of the Presbytery's churches were interested in this opportunity, MIP presented their proposal for a partnership application to the Presbytery's General Mission Council which approved their plans and the Presbytery, at its January 2007 meeting, voted to allow the process to go forward. In January 2008 a group of 13 persons will be in Nicaragua to work with CEPAD in selecting a mutually acceptable partner.
